Are you an Edmontonian parent looking for an Edmonton Chinese School for your children? Open Houses for schools are on the horizon.
It can be overwhelming when there are 18 Edmonton Chinese schools to choose from: 14 of which are Chinese bilingual programs held at Edmonton Public Schools. The bonus part about Edmonton Public Schools’ Chinese Bilingual Program is that anyone can enter the program. You do not have to be a native Mandarin Chinese speaker. The down-side? It is lottery-based. You can only apply to one school simultaneously (between Edmonton Public and Edmonton Catholic).
The good news is that you can always connect with a parent involved in the parent council of one of the 14 Edmonton Public Schools. I am involved with the parent council of a south-side Edmonton Public School; two of my kids are in the Chinese bilingual program. There are many fun extra-curricular activities in Edmonton Public Schools with Chinese bilingual programs. Wu-Shu, Chinese Cultural Dance and Kung-Fu to name a few; it depends on each school.
The factors in deciding which Edmonton Chinese School is the best fit for you would ultimately be proximity and available transportation. The yellow school buses may not serve the neighbourhood you live in. The other decision is whether your family prefers to learn the Chinese language on a weekend program versus going to a public school in Edmonton.

Salesian Chinese School 慈幼中文學校

Salesian Chinese School was founded in 1984. It is located at Mary Help of Christians Chinese Catholic Parish.
Classes are Saturday mornings from 9:30 am to 12 pm. Salesian Chinese School focuses on teaching verbal Cantonese (a Chinese dialect) while focusing on traditional written Chinese.
Norwood Chinese School 樂活中文學校

(Grade K to Grade 9)
Norwood Chinese School in Edmonton runs on Saturdays at the Westmount Junior High School. It is a non-profit school and is a parent-run school.
Norwood Chinese School offers Chinese courses in Mandarin and Cantonese. Cantonese is taught in the traditional Chinese character system while Mandarin courses are taught in simplified Chinese characters.

Edmonton Alliance Chinese School is another weekend Chinese school that runs on Saturdays. It was founded in 1977.
Edmonton Alliance Chinese School offers both Cantonese and Mandarin programs for kids as young as 3 years old up to 12 years old.

Caernarvon, Kildare and Dovercourt are north-side Edmonton neighbourhoods. Elmwood and Meadowlark are in West Edmonton. Parkallen and Meyonohk are south-side Edmonton public schools.

Esther Starkman Junior High School has just started offering the Chinese bilingual program in Southwest Edmonton. Grade 7 is available as of the 2024-2025 year.
